According to Reuters, Fifteen years after calling the open-source operating system Linux a “cancer,” former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has softened his position.
Speaking this week at a dinner hosted by Fortune magazine, Ballmer said the position was right for the time, but the threat from Linux was now “in the rearview mirror.”
“The company made a ton of money by fighting that battle very well,” he said.
Balmer took over the reins in 2000, before tech stocks started a 2-year fall, and he resigned in 2013.
Microsoft went on to integrate Linux into its Windows operating systems via Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Microsoft Azure, which heavily supports Linux workloads. WSL allows running Linux distributions, command-line tools, and GUI apps on Windows, while Azure offers various Linux distributions and services for cloud computing.
